Memorial Sports Center Offers Pro Athlete-Style Training and Rehabilitation in Hospital Setting

June 2005 — From baseball to tennis, and every sport in between, Memorial Sports Center offers professional expertise and training in one comprehensive program. All athletes, whether Little Leaguers or pro ballplayers, can improve their athletic performance through focused training, nutritional guidance and expert assitance from a team that includes athletic trainers, instructors, dietitians and physical therapists.

Individualized Program

"We are enthusiastic about what this program will do for athletes in our community," says Tony Milian, certified and licensed athletic trainer at Memorial Hospital West Fitness & Rehabilitation Center. "Our team of specialists develops training programs for peak athletic performance while helping keep the athlete injury-free."

Athletes enrolled in the program will have an initial evaluation to determine overall fitness levels and to establish performance goals. Following this evaluation, the athlete will meet with a dietitian to establish the right nutritional program for his or her particular training needs. A one-on-one session with a trained professional will then outline a conditioning program for maximum personalization and results.

Participants also will learn strengthening and agility skills to enhance their performance, as well as proper techniques to prevent injury during training and at game time.

"The uniqueness of our program is the ability to take an athlete from any skill point and improve on it at multiple levels," says Milian. "Our staff members are all certified or licensed in their profession, so athletes are getting the best advice possible in each area."

The Latest Component

Memorial Sports Center now includes a baseball skills development area. Equal in scope to a professional baseball training facility, it features batting cages, pitching machines and instruction from professional athletes to assist baseball players of all ages.

Bruce Aven, former major league outfielder for the Florida Marlins and current baseball instructor for Memorial Sports Center, can vouch for the level of training and conditioning available here. "Professional athletes are under the watchful eye of coaches and trainers whose job it is to keep them in top shape. With this program, it's as if they're back at the ball club, with some of the latest, top-of-the-line equipment."

In fact, in the off-season, many players turn to Memorial Hospital West Fitness & Rehabilitation Center to stay on top of their game.

From Youngsters to Pros

Participation at Memorial Sports Center is open to athletes age 6 and older, and offers both one-on-one and group sessions.

"You don't have to be a professional athlete to benefit," says Milian. "Our goal is to help healthy kids and adults who want to perform better, jump higher or run faster meet their goals."

Aven adds, "This program gives every athlete the advantage of having a team of experts not only to create an optimal sport-specific training program, but also to gauge progress and make adjustments along the way."
