Job Seekers Find New Opportunities at Memorial Hospital Miramar
December 2004 — Like the pioneers of the 1800s who rushed to claim land in new territories, modern-day job seekers are heading to Memorial Hospital Miramar in droves to fill 550 new positions at the hospital, which is scheduled to open in March 2005.
“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work in a brand-new hospital,” says Terrie Garner, Director of Human Resources for Memorial Hospital Miramar, “and we’ve been inundated with inquiries. From our announcement of job openings in mid-August to the end of October, we have received more than 15,000 applications. It’s just incredible.”
Those applications have come to Terrie and her staff through Memorial Healthcare System’s online job listings, through walk-in candidates and through the two job fairs that have been held for Memorial Hospital Miramar.
According to Terrie, there are several reasons for the massive interest in Memorial Hospital Miramar. “It’s a beautiful new facility with all new equipment,” she says. “People also are attracted by the Memorial name; they know about our exceptional reputation as a healthcare leader and have heard from others about the outstanding working environment we offer. And the location is so much more convenient for those who live in the Southwest Broward area and may be driving to work in hospitals in Miami.”
The Human Resources Department’s first priority has been to fill vacancies for nurses and other licensed professionals, and most of the remaining openings are for evening and weekend shifts. Clerical and support staff members are being hired as the licensed positions are filled. “We also are in great need for volunteers in all areas of the hospital,” Terrie says, “and we invite all interested people to call for information.”
Intensive Training Ahead
Every new Memorial Healthcare System employee must go through an orientation process to learn about policies and procedures, and Memorial Hospital Miramar employees will be no different. Nurses and licensed professionals will undergo four to 10 weeks of orientation training, depending on their positions. Support-service employees will go through orientation for two to three weeks. “Of course, we are hiring the most qualified person for each position,” Terrie says, “but Memorial has unique administrative systems and technology that some of our new employees might never have encountered before. So, we must provide training for these systems, which are designed to enhance patient safety and workplace efficiency.”
Not everyone who works at Memorial Hospital Miramar will be new to Memorial Healthcare System. Employees from other Memorial hospitals will be transferred to the new facility. “We will bring a number of licensed and non-licensed professionals who are excited about the chance to work in the new environment. In addition to their expertise in healthcare, they have extensive knowledge about our systems and policies. As a result, we expect to make a smooth and quick transition and to make Memorial Hospital Miramar another award-winning facility.”
