Memorial Regional Hospital Named One of America's Best Hospitals for Geriatric Care
October 2002 — "In caring for older patients with multiple ailments, Memorial Regional Hospital recently came out on top, according to US News & World Report magazine's 13th annual edition of "America's Best Hospitals." Memorial Regional Hospital was deemed one of the 50 highest-scoring hospitals for geriatrics, a testament to the hospital's commitment to providing comprehensive, high-quality care to all patients.
The competition was intense. Upon meeting specific criteria, 205 top medical centers were ranked from a pool of more than 6,000 applicants. To be considered for a specialty ranking, applicants had to meet specific standards, including availability of certain medical technology. The hospitals then received a score, the US News Index, which reflects reputation as well as care-related factors such as nursing.
Derived from the 2000 annual survey of hospitals for the American Hospital Association, other factors which contributed to Memorial Regional Hospital's positive ranking were:
- Number of specialty technology services
- Mix of patient and community services
- Ratio of full-time, on-staff registered nurses to hospital beds
- Availability of hospice care that provides pain relief and other care for the terminally ill
