How to Stick to Your New Year's Resolutions
January 2008 - Are you among the millions of Americans who are resolving to live a healthier lifestyle this year by following a more nutritious diet, exercising regularly or kicking bad habits? The following suggestions can help you stay on track in the coming weeks and months.
Find Out What the Doctor Orders
You can stop smoking and cut out junk food without a doctor's approval. But before you begin any exercise or weight-loss program, ask your doctor about exercises and dietary changes appropriate for your age and condition.
Pay Attention to Details
Rather than say, "I'm going to lose weight this year," plan specific, realistic steps for losing weight. Whether it's reducing fast food or taking a brisk walk every evening, define your goals.
Get All Worked Up
Approach your resolution with excitement and enthusiasm. Don't roll your eyes and think, "Ugh, I have to do a cardio workout tonight." Instead, tell yourself, "Hey, tonight's my favorite cardio class!"
Bring a Buddy
Have a friend join you in your self-improvement campaign. Having someone else to cheer you on - and cheering for someone else - is especially helpful for keeping resolutions.
Do Your Homework
Want to eat healthier? Find out what foods you should eat to get a diet rich in vitamins, minerals, protein and fiber. If it will inspire you, study the negative impact of those starchy, salty, sugary foods you gave up.
Jot It Down
Keep a chart or diary to track your progress. It doesn't have to be fancy - just something you can look back on for inspiration. It's like taking pictures of a house before you start renovating it.
Slow and Steady
Be patient. With any exercise or diet plan, it usually takes about eight weeks to see results. If you're feeling unsure about continuing, let your accomplishments motivate you.
