Keeping Secrets

Men with Eating Disorders

January 2002 -- Eight hundred thousand males in this country are hiding something: an eating disorder. While many perceive this primarily as a female issue, 10 percent of those who suffer are male.

Exploring the Differences

Many of the factors that lead to eating disorders among young adults are similar. Both boys and girls with eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia may have experienced:

  • Low self-esteem
  • Peer pressure
  • Physical abuse
  • Drug or alcohol abuse
  • Depression and other emotional disorders
  • Problems with family and friends

However, there are differences that separate the genders.

"Most males with eating disorders are less likely to get help," explains Teddy Speropoulos, Director of Diabetes Centers of the Memorial Healthcare System. "They tend to hide the disorder from others, and deny that it's an issue until they are too sick." Additionally, Protopapadakis notes that males who suffer from eating disorders often fall into one of two groups - those who are athletic and those who are concerned with body image.

"Athletes, such as jockeys and wrestlers, have to maintain a certain body weight. They will often do anything to achieve their desired weight. This can include purging (vomiting) after meals and the use of diuretics and laxatives," she says. "Male models and ballet dancers often use over-exercising, as well as binging and purging, to maintain their body image."

Getting Treatment

Spotting an eating disorder early is often as difficult as stopping it. Children should recognize the importance of body acceptance, the facts about eating disorders and the benefits of early treatment.

"We treat eating disorders as an addiction," explains Protopapadakis. "This treatment includes various therapies and nutrition guidance."
