Memorial Healthcare System’s Diabetes Education Program Receives Accreditation from American Diabetes Association
August 2005 — Memorial Healthcare System’s Diabetes Education Program has been recognized by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) for Quality Self-Management Education, receiving a three-year accreditation from the ADA. The accreditation is granted to those programs that meet certain national standards for both adult and pediatric diabetic patients.
Memorial Healthcare System offers Diabetes Education Programs at both Memorial Regional Hospital and Memorial Hospital West. Outreach services include community screenings and free support groups.
The American Diabetes Association recognizes this program as meeting the national standards for diabetes self-management education. These standards include compliance with individualized patient education, improved outcomes, documentation and community wellness promotion, as well as greater consistency in the quality and quantity of education offered to people with diabetes. The ADA endorsed the Standards in 1983 and has recognized programs that meet the Standards since 1987.
“We are honored to receive this accreditation, which shows the caliber of program that Memorial Healthcare System is committed to providing our patients and community at large,” says J. E. Piriz, Administrator for Memorial Regional Hospital.
Memorial Healthcare System’s Inpatient and Outpatient Diabetes Programs feature a staff of knowledgeable healthcare professionals focused on improving quality of life for diabetic adults and children. With guidance from these experts, patients can learn about glucose monitoring, medication options, meal planning, foot care and the importance of exercise. After their initial assessment and education, they can return for further assistance or to help others in support groups.
