Rebel's Drop-In Center

Named in honor of a young person coping with mental health issues, Rebel's Drop-In Center is open 365 days a year to provide social support, advocacy and peer counseling for individuals recovering from mental health or substance abuse issues. Featuring support groups, recreational activities and more, the free center is open at no cost to the community, and no appointment is needed. The center is a partnership of Memorial Healthcare System, the Department of Children and Families and the Human Services Department of Broward County.

Since opening in 2001, Rebel's Drop-In Center has helped more than 1,630 participants in their efforts to overcome mental health and/or substance abuse issues. The center has earned a reputation as a safe and supportive, prejudice-free environment with impressive outcomes. For clients receiving mentoring to reduce hospitalization rates, 92 percent are not hospitalized during the first 90 days in the program, and 90 percent of participants surveyed show Improvement in Life Skills and Emotional Stability. For Drop-In participants, 89 percent of individuals surveyed indicate reduced feelings of stress and isolation.

"Many of our patrons have been coming here since the very beginning," says Director Deanne O'Brien. "This is their social life, we're family." O'Brien says every staff member has been with the center at least seven years, including seven certified peer specialists who are in recovery from mental health and/or substance abuse conditions themselves. "The center is a unique program and Memorial Healthcare System has been an exceptional host," she says. "We're a great match for patient- and family-centered care."

The center is open Monday through Friday, from 3 to 8pm, weekends and holidays from noon to 5pm.
