Safety
Every member of the healthcare team is responsible for providing a safe environment for our patients, their families, and our staff.
Support an alcohol and drug free workplace.
Always wear your name badge on the right side of your body at eye level with the picture visible.
Falls, patient care errors and labeling errors are preventable:
- Encourage a restraint-free environment. Restraints are only used as a last resort. Use alternative measures to prevent patient falls and injuries.
- Always use the 5 Rights of Medication Administration: Right Drug, Right Dose, Right Route, Right Patient, Right Time.
- Label all specimens at the bedside with the correct patient’s label and check that the label on the specimen matches the patient’s armband and requisition.
- Verify that all pages of the medical record document have the correct patient label.
Emergency Preparedness:
- Know your role in emergencies as stated in the Emergency Management Plan. Be prepared to take the correct and prompt action.
Take time to check your patient’s identification each and every time using the two following identifiers:
- Ask the patient to state his or her name.
- Compare the name and MR# on the ID band to the order form, MAR, etc.
Note: The DOB should be used when a third identifier is needed. (i.e., name alert, etc.)
You are responsible for a safe, secure accident-free environment. Eliminate safety and security risks:
- Provide a safe environment. Adhere to proper hand-washing techniques.
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE) when appropriate.
- Comply with laws and regulations concerning the handling and disposal of hazardous waste.
- Use proper body mechanics when pushing, pulling, lifting or carrying. Get help when necessary.
- Verify that equipment is in good working order and use it appropriately.
- Remove broken equipment and furniture from service; label and submit a work order.
- Be sure all visitors are identified and directed or escorted to their destinations.
- Report security risks and all accidents promptly and accurately to the appropriate authority.
