Memorial Cancer Institute
Disease-Specific Programs:
Breast Cancer
Memorial Breast Cancer Centers is the leading breast cancer program in Broward County, offering patients and their families a superior level of individualized care. Conveniently located on the Memorial Regional Hospital campus in Hollywood and at Memorial Hospital West in Pembroke Pines, the centers are two of only a few freestanding facilities nationwide dedicated exclusively to this disease.
Both locations provide a comprehensive program that encompasses breast cancer prevention, disease management and recovery. Every year, more than 1,000 new patients at risk for, or diagnosed with, breast cancer come to the center for specialized breast cancer expertise, access to clinical trials, integrative therapies and essential support service.
Superior medical expertise and leading-edge treatments are provided under the direction of highly experienced medical oncologist/hematologist Alejandra T. Perez, MD. Designed with input from breast cancer survivors, the Breast Cancer Centers’ focus is on wellness and healing. The entire healthcare team is dedicated to providing a warm, calm, welcoming environment for patients and their families and friends.
To expedite treatment planning, the multidisciplinary breast cancer team communicates continually to evaluate newly diagnosed or relapsed cases and determine the optimal clinical approach for each individual.
The multidisciplinary breast cancer team includes:
- Medical Oncologists
- Surgical Oncologists
- Radiation Oncologists
- Pathologists
- Geneticists
- Plastic Surgeons
- Radiologists
- Nurse Practitioners
- Pharmacists
- Support Personnel
Recognizing the importance of early detection, the team at Memorial Breast Cancer Centers works closely with breast imaging services throughout Memorial Healthcare System. The Women’s Imaging Centers at Memorial Regional Hospital, Memorial Hospital West and Memorial Hospital Miramar have earned the American College of Radiology Breast Imaging Center of Excellence designation recognizing accreditation and high practice standards in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound and ultrasound-guided breast biopsy. In addition, a variety of breast imaging services are offered at Memorial Regional Hospital South and Memorial Hospital Pembroke, and by the Mobile Digital Mammography Van. All diagnostic screenings and digital mammograms are read by board-certified, fellowship-trained radiologists who specialize in mammography.
Treatment options include chemotherapy, radiation, hormonal manipulation, biologicals and novel schedules to reduce the toxicity of chemotherapeutic agents. Participation in multiple NCI FDA-approved clinical trials is offered through a robust clinical research program. Tumor genetic profiling enables treatment plans to be designed for selected populations.
The Medical Oncologists have built a program for individuals at increased risk for breast cancer. This program includes Genetic Testing, counseling and surveillance for those needing more frequent monitoring.
The Centers integrate standard care with complementary and supportive approaches including acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, pink-ribbon yoga, massage, meditation and relaxation techniques. These have been shown to relieve symptoms, decrease side effects and improve quality of life.
Our breast cancer recovery philosophy underscores the importance of exercise in maintaining a healthy immune system and positive outlook. Nutritional counseling is offered to support breast health. Individualized chemotherapy teaching provides treatment-specific instructions designed to facilitate side-effect management. The Image Recovery Center ® is available to help cancer patients cope with the physical and emotional changes that can result from chemotherapy, radiation or surgery. Now open at Memorial Hospital West and under development at Memorial Regional Hospital, the program is an integral part of Memorial Cancer Institute’s and Memorial Breast Cancer Centers' interdisciplinary approach to treatment, healing and overall wellness.
